Florida International University
|East Carolina University is a leader in distance education in North Carolina, offering more than 80 online degree and certificate programs. The school maintains the largest Blackboard system of any college within the University of North Carolina system, serving more than 28,000 students each year. The university’s online teaching degree is offered as a bachelor’s of science in education with concentrations available in either birth through kindergarten or family and computer sciences education.
The birth through kindergarten track equips students to pursue careers in environments ranging from residential placement centers and early intervention programs to childcare centers and public schools. Meanwhile, the second track prepares students for a wide range of careers teaching vocational skills to middle and high school students. The curriculum focuses on six different career areas: community and family services, culinary arts and hospitality, early childhood education, food science, human services work development, interior design services, and family and consumer sciences advanced study. Courses in these programs cover topics like family resource management, literacy development in early childhood, and technology in education.
Both of these online teaching degrees are provided as completion programs for students who have already finished general education requirements at another accredited institution. This program is offered as a non-licensure option and can be completed entirely online, but is only available to North Carolina residents.
Online coursework is identical to on-campus courses and is taught by the same faculty. The coursework is supplemented by real-time chat sessions, text-based discussion boards, and orientation materials for synchronous learning online. The Department of Human Development and Family Science is accredited by the National Council of Teacher Education and the Department of Public Instruction within the Public Schools of North Carolina.
